Educating and Advocating
Related to country: Philippines

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Philippines is somewhat experiencing the wrath of environment. In a manifesto written of the delegates of the recent World Creative Youth Forum, it quotes “that climate change is the greatest threat to the existence of all life forms on earth. We are alarmed that this grave planetary emergency facing humankind is largely ignored in many parts of the world.” In recent study being conducted by the Kalikasan Org, it shows that the Philippines, so with different countries in Southeast Asia, are likely to be one of the most affected country, and region, in the world that will experience the wrath of environment through Climate Change.

It is said that EDUCATION is a primary key in solving any problems that this world encounter. Hunger, war, environment destruction, diseases, and more may lead to a worsen condition if proper education to those not availing it was not given.

Knowing that this information was not just a mere illusion of current condition of our globe, it is also deemed that the youth must start now to act in facing these problems. Education and advocating for the betterment of the world and environment is needed. Starting with our own self was a call that most advocates addressed the young generation but since only a few reacted to that call, we must find means to empower the youth, inspire them to take even simple actions and motivating them to be a better advocate. To make them think that the world is really ours to keep and protect.

Hearing Voices
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

"I hear voices in my head, only those that I dream about. Maybe it's true that I'm in love with you or maybe I'm just hearing it too. I don't know how to get away with this, to stop dreaming wide awake. I hate the way this makes me feel, happy but sad for real. If only you could hear those voices too then I guess it would mean a dream come true..."

Walking... walking... walking...

Step... step... step...

It seems like counting the endless hours of my sleepless night wanting to just spend the while with you and make my dreams come true. Just today I have thought of something that literally made me smile, I thought of your voice telling me things like this and things like that. The way you speak and make those facial gestures just moves me. It makes me feel wonderful. You are every breathe I take, every word I speak, and every smile I seek. I know that this is already an addiction, so much more to that; an obsession. This is quite a hard logic to understand, why I still believe in magic though the trick doesn't work anymore or why I still believe in fairy tales even though I know that there is really no such thing as a happily ever after... You never fail to amuse me; to be honest, it is always you that makes a difference in my everyday life. I keep hearing voices in my head and I just do not know what to do.

"I saw you yesterday, played the games we've liked to play. I saw you today; it made my heart beating fast. I see you tomorrow, happy and left me alone in sorrow. I'm not scared, just a little worried... What would life be without you?"

Jump... jump... jump...

Hop... hop... hop...

This melodramatic moment tonight make me wonder how life has been for someone like me. I've been around life's mysteries and I never found anything as uncertain as love me. I don't know why I can still see amidst all these impossibilities of you loving me or us being together. I can't quite figure out what keeps this candle burning inside of me that gives me hope, that gives me a better perspective of "maybe". My what ifs are unending, my wishful thinking dominates all of what is meant by having me not part of the equation. I am but hopefool of the fact that someday I would get the same feeling too; though not more than what I give at least something for me to receive. Damn! I keep hearing voices in my head for I have always been missing you...

"If only what I feel for you would be what you'd feel for me too then I guess I'd find no reason anymore to wish for a dream come true. You are everything that I wanted, all the things I thought I'd knew but you are so full of surprises and I just can't read a single move you make. You are like my life's jigsaw puzzle, something that I can never solve unless you lend me a hand; or better yet, a heart cause you already took mine away..."

Run... run... run...

Fly... fly... fly...

I have made an indelible remark to myself that when I fall I crash and burn as well... You have proven it to me and you just keep on proving it every single day. I can not imagine what it is to finally find someone who would make a whole lot of awful difference. You are my life now. You have that most beautiful smile I've ever seen, it's so beautiful that it made me give up my heart happiness the very moment I saw it. I can't quite seem to throw this thought of mine, this thought of having you by my side from the moment I close my eyes until I open it again the next morning. If you ask me if it hurts it does, if you ask me if I'd still love you even if you ask me to stop I'd still do, if you ask me to go away then I would, but please don't ask me to cause there could never be me anymore without you... I keep hearing voices in my head over and over again. It whispers, it shouts, it talks about a lot of things. I keeps hearing voices in my head, your voice that changes all the while; I know it's you, never could be anyone else and wide awake I wish, I wish for that voice to finally say "I love you too."

National Blog Posting Month

Remember National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) back in November? You all used the opportunity to take a swing at churning out a 50,000-word novel on your blogs in only one month — some with great success!

There’s also NaBloPoMo, which has nothing to do with post-modernism, but with blogging! It stands for National Blog Posting Month.

It’s an even more fitting occasion for posting regularly to your blog on the topics that interest you. And maybe the best part is that it starts whenever you want it to! The only objective is to post every day for a month. So why not begin with July? To make it official, sign up here. It’s open to anyone with a blog, anywhere in the world.

The NaBloPoMo team provides a theme for each month, which isn’t mandatory, but is a nice way to gain inspiration that can kick off your daily updates.

Not into that? Then we suggest sticking to the stuff you’ve been blogging about all along — the things you experience and love — with the added caveat of keeping it on the regular.

If you run out of steam, you can always find ways to blog about the dozens of weird celebrations and holidays that take place in July, in addition to Independence Day in the U.S. — like Ice Cream Soda Day, Video Games Day, or Bugs Bunny’s Birthday.

To plug the WordPress community into your endeavor, we suggest using NaBloPoMo09 as a tag on each post you publish to your blog. They’ll show up on the tag results page, which is also a great place to get inspired by your fellow bloggers.

A note: Please refrain from commenting with questions about NaBloPoMo in response to this post. It’s not a WordPress project. Instead, check out their FAQ to learn more about its objectives and requirements.

Happy (daily) blogging!

Problem Statement: Youth Entrepreneurship Project
Related to country: Philippines

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

According to a report made by the Philippine National Youth Commission (NYC) on its website out of 100 Pilipino school aged kids only 90 will be enrolled in Grade 1. 40 will finish High School and only 12 will eventually finish college.
NYC Education slide

The Data tells us that by the time youth gets to Secondary Education 60% will be considered Out of School Youth (OSY) and by Tertiary Education jumps to near 80%.
For every 100 unemployed Filipinos, 52 belonged to the age group 15 to 24 years.
By observations most common reasons for stopping school is the lack of financial resources. Most Pilipino youth are forced by circumstances to work at an early age to supplement the family income. Being “uneducated” they settle for low paying jobs which barely keeps them alive.

Some steps are being made by the government to address the issues but they are not enough. One such action is the passing of the Republic Act 9547, which expands the government subsidized student job plan.

Cebu Rep. Eduardo Gullas said Republic Act 9547, which takes effect April 23, enables a greater number of private and public entities to engage more youngsters 15 years of age but not more than 25 years old under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES).(http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=457979&publicationSubCategoryId=442)

“Congress decided to quickly build up the SPES in view of the growing number of youths desperately looking for productive work, so that they may have extra income not just to help finance their schooling, but also to support their families,” Gullas said. “This reinforced program will surely go a long way in addressing mounting youth joblessness,” he added. (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=457979&publicationSubCategoryId=442)

Teaching the youth to be entrepreneurs would help them finish their schooling as well as help provide future jobs for other people. This would lessen competition for jobs at the same time increase job availability.

Begin With The End In Mind
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

“There is no such thing as free lunch,” they say. I particularly have fondness to this saying because in its veils it states how living is costly and, as we may notice throughout each day, consequential. What we choose to do now has an effect in due time.

I have tried to outline in my head the social issues that my project addresses. I have made it very clear to myself that the objectives would be 1.) to develop socially responsible businesses and 2.) to develop a socially interested, aware, and active Philippine market.

There are several societal groups that I want this project to target.

ENTREPRENEURS

Years back, I used to handle an online shop that sold the products I made during my free time. I got good feedback from the market especially when they found out that part of the proceeds went to fund community outreaches. I felt good as an entrepreneur, but I even felt better knowing that the heart of my business was rooted in giving back. Now, years later, I want to be able to extend that option to other entrepreneurs as well.

The tagline I initially came up with for this project is FREECREATE: Fusing Freedom and Creativity. As a freelance artist at that time, and being around other artists and entrepreneurs, too, I thought of finding a way to get us all together – make profit and contribute to the community. Freedom stood for the advocacies we could support; and creativity embodies the imagination we’d have to exercise in using our skills to further common good. Having immersed myself in the world of development, I have been approached a lot of times by entrepreneurs and artists asking how they can help or what projects they could possibly get involved with. It was clear that they wanted to help but did not know what avenues were available to them.

ADVOCACY GROUPS
GAP’s RED line. Make Poverty History white bands. Tom’s Shoes’ One For One philosophy. The Body Shop’s Community Trade and Against Animal Testing values. UN’s FEED bags. These products are results of the fusion of fundraising and IEC (Information, Education, & Communications) departments. I have yet to research how much these have raised but the fact that people walk around wearing these products proudly speaks volumes about its success.

A lot of grassroots-level organizations that need help with their fundraising and information-raising mechanisms can take cue from what has been done. Here in the Philippines, we have an abundance of local products that deserve to be marketed and an overflowing roster of artists that could tailor the packaging of these products to suit the marketing need of the organizations.

By offering products that give back to the community, we manage to help a lot of groups along the way – the advocacy group that fund and profile-raises, the local producers that earn a sustainable living, and the community that learns about social issues.

CONSUMER-LEVEL

Living in a developing country makes the cheapest option seem to be the best option. The bigger picture that includes our present purchases’ future consequences is painted of in shades of unappealing grey. As well, benefit products are frowned upon because of the relatively more expensive price tag attached to it.

I aim for FreeCreate to paint a wholistic picture in the minds of every purchasing citizen – where every product is from, how it is made, who made it, how long its use will last, who will be affected by its use, and where it goes upon expiration. I also want that through FreeCreate, the social issues both locally and internationally, are brought to the surface for people to ponder on and realize that there is a bigger world out there that serves more than our consumer pride.

Armed with clear knowledge, I see hope for this project to be a success in both amassing profit and creating a socially responsible and conscientious economy. At the end of it all, I want to enable citizens to help themselves help the world.

400th Entry: The Best of Rowjielogy Vol. 3

The Best of Rowjielogy Vol. 3This is my 400th blog entry here in my blog and I know my fellow bloggers understand the feeling of reaching this “so-called milestone”. Haha.

Well, I find this a nice way to jumpstart this new month/third quarter of the year/second half of the year. Well, I want to be positive as we start the second half of this year. And as usual, I always try to view my archive and look for my favorite posts. For Volume 3, I looked for my favorite posts from entry #300-399.

What I mean with “the best of Rowjielogy”, is a collection of my favorite entries.

Woah. It seems like only yesterday when I posted those blog entries and I am amazed how fast time passed by. But definitely, looking back to past blog entries make me feel good, inspired, and full of hope for better and happier things to come!

Keep On Moving

I have tried opening and updating my curriculum vitae/résumé again yesterday. Well, it definitely means that I opened myself again to possible opportunities that might come to me. Well, no plans of resignation yet, but I am just now open to the thought of grabbing a better opprotunities if it will be given to me.

I went to job searh engines again and looked at the current job openings. It gave me the thought of getting out of what I know as of the moment, and try to learn new things.

A friend of mine at work has resigned and it actually makes me feel bad. But when I thought about it, it’s her choice and she already know what she’s doing. If she thinks she made the right decision, then I support her for that.

While we were eating our lunch today, someone said that he thinks that I got a big amount of savings in my bank account. Well… that’s my wish! Haha. I still got to pay some debts. But I am happy that I can still save little by little. And then another one said, “He has a goal in life”. I suddenly stopped and asked myself… “Goal? What is my goal in life?”.

Those thoughts are actually on my mind right now. But I am sure that I want to keep on moving forward…

Night-less'
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

It is when there is so much wonderland inside my mind that this night-less engagement takes place. There's a lot to think about, even more to ponder, and something to make the moment last until my wary eyes surrender to the darkness that envelopes this world. This is a matter of which occurrence I can not explain, neither can the ages tell me why all these is possible. It is when your heart starts pounding as if it wants to break free and see everything around her into full context; of what things are like and how they ever make a difference to another person. This is something which without any doubt or hesitation takes place without my consent. Unpredictable, a natural existence among mortals, among us humans that is beyond our realm of imagination... Love...

"I wonder how this feeling works. Does it last a lifetime? Will it hurt even more? When does it end? How is it possible? When did it start taking place? I have so many questions, so many doubts. I do not understand, I need an answer and the only answer I guess for all these would be having you feel the same way for me too. When that happens, I will know, I will learn, and I will understand how this feeling works."

Walking down the memory lane I have seen some of its mysteries. Some are revealing others are not. It really takes so much time before you would ever start wondering why things happen or how they happen, so much time to make you realize that you are already hurting, so much time to make you realize that you are already somewhere far beyond your greatest dreams, and so much time to make you realize that you are already madly deeply crazily in love with her; so much time to make you not own your heart anymore... This happened to me not once, not twice, but more than I have ever expected, I'm getting used to the feeling; the feeling of being hurt because of loving and fighting for that love all alone... Sometimes I wish for that day to come, the day when someone would eventually make me understand all these mysteries and bring me to places I knew not where. It gets me excited though, makes me thirst for more than just a cup of my favorite mocha frapuccino or more than just a chapter of my favorite Time Traveler's Wife novel. This is something more already, something I have always been expecting to happen... Being night-less, being in love...

"then heaven answers my cry when raindrops fall into my very eye..."

I can truly endure this night-less extravagance by just thinking of the way you glance. The moonlight makes me wanna dance, sway with the music of love's trance. Nothing I guess would change this night, this night of sleep without delight. My heart pounds, my chest can barely contain it; you're taking it away, you're hurting it. Make me happy, even more a fool; let love devour me, let it hurt; for tonight would be the last night, the last night I will endure. There's something in the way you look at me, though nothing has been said and done to see. I love you just the way you are; I don't know why, but I guess love is just so wonderful tonight that it makes me wanna hug you and hold you tight...

Culture of Knowledge and Production
Related to country: Philippines

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Unemployment and underemployment, education, climate change and food security are some of the issues that the RenewIT project hopes to address. This project will establish platforms for collaboration and innovation to address these issues. The design solutions will then take the form of plans and programs and facilities for community renewal.

One of the main reasons why young people flock to cities from rural areas is to find work. However, most of these youths find themselves doing underpaid work or worse not being hired at all. These problems are then aggravated by high cost of urban living. In order to stay living in the cities, some of these youths chose to earn in informal economy where standardized skills and school diplomas are not required. Street food vending, handcrafting, gardening and basic carpentry and masonry are examples of their self-employed skills. What if there is a way to upgrade and enhance these set of inherent and familiar skills to establish and build mini-infrastructures and sustainable facilities in their own communities? Establishing a community IT center for out-of-school youths, building urban and organic farming facilities, setting up a community trade and produce market and community resource mapping are the promising ideas that can be implemented within the project.

The youth are particularly aware of the issues of non-inclusive education, unemployment, and shortage of youth-oriented social services. The project aims to enlighten and relate to them global issues of climate change, financial crisis, globalisation and inter-cultural matters and how these are all connected and manifest at their local community level.

The main thrust for the project is to empower youth through sustainable leadership and community action. We seek to train the youth to become entrepreneurs and aspiring designers servicing their community needs.

I think it is important that the youth should not only learn how to find job but also to learn to create opportunities and build communities.

Birthdate Tells It So

I admit that I somehow believe that the characteristics of a person can be read through his/her birth date.

If the results are good, then fine. If not, then I try to realize if it’s true or not. I actually don’t want to focus on the good results. I  just keep it to myself. I’d rather point out the negative results if I want to share it to others.

Anyway, according to Facebook:

Rowell Discover Secret of Birthdate!
This is the results :

You were born on 18th of April 1985.

:: Actor.
:: Talented to entertain people.
:: Loving and generous.
:: With their natural attraction, they have no problems to befriend with anybody.
:: Have a lots of personality that make others hard to understand them.
:: Like a chameleon, they manage to suits themselves with environment.
:: Lucky, but they suffer cause they depend mostly in luck and mood.

Rowell Discovered About Love & Life via Day of Birth!
Story about Rowell’s Love & Life! are :

You were born on 18th day of April 1985, Thursday.

Your Life : At first glance, people think you are quiet type of person. Actually you are cheerful, but conditionally. You will show your joyful character only in good mood. One the other hand, when you are moody, no one would dare to be around. Because of your emotion fluctuation and frank character, some find you hard to be around.

Your Love : You hardly show your feeling towards opposite sex no matter how much you like him/her. Your partner also has similar character so your love affairs often take quite a while to flourish. Time tells it all. Your sincerity makes you very attractive.

Personally speaking, I find the results above correct. But it would e better if other people will be the ones to judge it.

Mobile Thoughts #1

First of all, welcome to Mobile Thoughts, where I’ll be posting short random ideas using my mobile phone. I really hope that I can do this everyday. Anyway, my random thoughts for today…

1. Michael Jackson’s death is still in the headlines. I feel sad when I hear his songs played on the radio and when I see his music videos on MTV.

2. I have watched “The Transformers” with my college friends. The effects are great. The story is just fine. I’ll be making a review of the movie soon.

3. I had a flu shot yesterday and I am feeling its side effects. I suddenly had mild colds and I felt a little dizzy this morning.

A Learning Project
Related to country: Philippines

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Right after my graduation from College, I set everything I want to do in life just to achieve my dream – that is to pass the board exam. However, it was a rainy June when my best friend called me and asked if I can do part time teaching as a substitute instructor. And I never that knew that a simple yes to her would definitely change the way I see my life and my role in the community.

I started to teach on July of 2007. I was new with the system or on how to work in academe but somewhat I enjoy it. I always thought teaching was hard but when I started to enjoy it, I learn to love my job. However, as time passes by and semesters starting to end, I found out some problems shared by my student regarding their studies and regarding the community. It was my understanding as a mentor that made me think that life was really not easy for those persons who are really deprived of their right to know things. As an advocate of youth, I started to look for several organizations that can help me.

When my term of teaching ends on March of 2008, I leave behind a community with my students there living in a political turmoil due to a conflict of interest in the Methane Power Plant. It’s a sad fact that all of us suffer (financially and emotionally) due to the conflict that rises during those times. I leave teaching for a while and continue to pursue seeking partners for community project that I envisioned together with my friend – that is a community learning center that doesn’t only teach academic matters but also will motivate them to be empowered individual that will look back to the importance of the environment.

July of 2008, I started to work in a Compact Fluorescent Lamp Testing Laboratory here in the Philippines. As an Electrician, it’s always been a passion for me to strive and help save energy. Together with my colleague in work, we work ways to look for partners in the project I had in my mind. She was a very supportive teammate.

When the opportunity came that the Young People We Care in Ghana looked for a Youth Action Ambassador, I applied for it thinking that it will help me further in my community development. After evaluation, I passed their qualification and became their country representative. With the opportunity at hand and the trust given to me by my colleagues in Ghana, I started to push through and find several tie up partners – including the Youth Advocates for United Nations (YAUN).

YAUN is non-profit youth group that advocates the UN MDG and Youth Empowerment. With them, I started to be involved again in working close to the community. Every Saturdays, we have an outreach program for the Youth inside the depressed community in Arboretum in Quezon City. Having been involve in such activities, again, made me think more of ways to build a learning center for our community in Montalban. With the help of YAUN, I started to plan for it.

It was May of 2009, another opportunity came to me. The team I’m working with starting to migrate to other countries and yet, It was good that the World Creative Youth Forum accepted my application. WCYF is an international forum discussing several issues like environment, peace, youth empowerment, ethical living, and more. I met there several youth leaders in our country and in the world, and I’ve shared my plans to them. Now, I’m starting to regain my determination to push on this project for my students and for the environment. In that forum, it’s a sad fact that the present condition of the world is worsen because of our “lost love” to the environment. I want to help the world by bringing back that love back to the environment.

That month also, I accepted offered to me by my school and for the second time, I will again teach. Different setting, maybe different class, but again, this is a good opportunity. After all, I need a support from our local university to further establish my project – for the student and for the environment.

June of 2009, it’s a good news that Sprout added me to the roster of its E-course program. Actually, I organized many events in the past with the organizations I’m with but it’s very much different to organize it starting from myself and all I need is the right plan and right time. God’s been putting me into this present condition because I believe He will guide me all along.
The learning center for the youth will be the major project I will have before my term for YPWC ends on September. With the right group of persons I’m with now, I think everything is in place. 

Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

Source: CNN.com

Source: CNN.com

I had some thoughts of Michael Jacson for the past few days. First, when I answered a prompt in Plinky asking “Whose famous people did I see in real life?” (Click here). I answered Michael Jackson. I feel very lucky to see him when he had a concert here in the Philippines in 1996. I actually did not watch his concert but I saw him when he went to a public hospital in Parañaque. He waved at the people outside from the second floor of the building.

Second, on my way home the other day, the bus was playing his concert on TV. We can’t really help but watch his outstanding performances. I am not actually a huge fan of MJ but I really consider him as an icon, inspite of all the controversies about him. His talent is one of a kind and his songs are classics. Some people even cry when they see MJ performs live.

For him to be called the “King of Pop” means he has the same level of respect from people like Elvis Presley, Madonna, The Beatles, etc.

That’s why I am really shocked after hearing the news that he already passed away at the age of 50. He is such a big loss in the music industry, but I know that he will always be remembered and his music will live forever.

Goodbye Michael! Thank you for your music that inspired all of us.
